AIMS Podcast Event and Geek Dinner IV

I attended the Association of Internet Marketing and Sales of Canada event on Podcasting yesterday. It was a good line up featuring Mitch Joel of Twist Image, Michael Seaton of Scotiabank, and Judy McAlpine of CBC.

I have been looking forward to hearing Mitch speak for a while. In his presentation, there wasn’t anything necessarily enlightening for me in Mitch’s presentation (I drink the same kool-aid he does), but he delivers it with a style and passion that is highly compelling. One thing that really resonated with me is his central theme of how we have moved from “Content is Everything” to “Everything is Content” and finally to “Content is Media”. It is a very succinct way of saying something that I spend a lot of time trying to explain to colleagues and clients alike.

I enjoyed Michael Seaton’s presentation on the success of The Money Clip podcast for Scotiabank. I can’t say how heartening it is to see an industry that is as conservative and highly regulated as the banking industry among the leaders in exploring new media. The key to their strategy is providing valuable content in a personal and engaging way while avoiding the sales pitch, calls to action and ROI mechanisms that plague many corporate efforts in this area. Michael, check your feed stats, you have one more subscriber in me.

Last up was Judy McAlpine who is in charge of CBC’s podcasting efforts. I am a die-hard fan of many CBC One, shows and podcasts and was glad to hear that they are planning on expanding their efforts (my brother Graham, who moved from Toronto to Prague will also be very happy to hear that there will be more podcast content from CBC).

Finally the evening ended with my first Geek Dinner, but the fourth one to date. It was a great time and I met some very interesting people geeks. It was a bit of a contrast between Throng (the social media meetup that my wife and I hold monthly) as it was a sit down dinner and thus tends to limit conversation to those in your immediate vicinity. Thankfully I scored a great table and had some great conversations with both Andrew Findlater of National PR and Kathryn Lagden GM of AIMS Canada.

Thanks to Mitch, Michael, Julia Stein and anyone else who had a hand organizing geek dinner I had a great time.
