‘Blag: When what is new to you, isn’t so new

BlagA co-worker of mine asked if I had seen “Boom goes the Dynamite“, which is a truly painful video of an amateur sports anchor struggling to deliver the news. It is as awkward, funny and “itchy” as a good episode of The Office and also fairly stale in internet terms – I believe I saw it over a year ago.

No one who works for a living (or at least wants to keep their job) can possibly keep tabs on all the latest memes and viral videos on the web, so we began talking about the need for a term to describe when something is new to you, but not actually new to others around you. After a few unweildy attempts such as”Deja View” or”DejaTube”, we arrived at WebLag or ‘Blag as an etomologically viable description.

Blag (noun): 1. A mistaken sense of novelty. 2. A state of discovering something that is not even remotely new.

Example: Brad is sad because he is suffering from blag – he just discovered Star Wars Kid.

The Urban Dictionary lists several possible definitions for the word blag, but in my totally biased opinion most of the others seem like force fits to me.
